Sharing the "Donkey": Reflections on Participatory Art Practice in Contemporary Morocco
An anthropological analysis of the Hmar Tahouna theatrical project. The article examines how director Salah Charef reinterprets the pejorative term "Hmar" (donkey) through participatory theater — transforming an insult into a device for narrating collective social reality. It explores the "zriba" (livestock shed) as both physical stage and methodology, the rejection of proscenium hierarchy in favour of the "harqa" circular Moroccan collective form, and how the project name itself becomes a shared identity among participants.
